Asking for links can work but you need so many to make a difference and it is so time consuming, it really doesn't pay. The best links are one-way inbound links. What I mean is links from websites that don't require a reciprocal link.

As for blog commenting; it's been my experience that most blogs do employ the nofollow tag. We don't on our blog because we are trying to help small business, but we do check to make sure the comments are not just spam.

Articles can be an effective way of building website traffic and back links. My experience is that many use the nofollow for links within the article, but not for the links in the authors bio.

There are ways to get relevant back links including quality bookmarking sites such as StumbleUpon and Digg. Adding your website to directories can be an effective way also, but you have to make sure Google doesn't consider the directory you choose to be a spam site or use black hat techniques.

Very informative. I didn't know most comments were no-follow links. So you're saying, asking for links usually doesn't work and commenting on blogs for links doesn't work. If all this is true HOW does one generate quality links back to your blog quickly? Does article marketing work?

I keep hearing conflicting statements . . .and try it all, but not seeing measurable results.

Thanks!
