Why It’s Important To Make Sure Your Website Is Optimized

Why is it so hard for some small business owners to understand the importance of having their website properly optimized?  They know enough to have a website, but when it comes to ensuring that it is properly optimized, they can’t be bothered.  Many of these small business owners think it’s just an unnecessary expense.

Basic Search Engine Optimization

Basic SEO does not have to cost you anything; it is something you can do yourself.  Even the simplest things can help improve your search rankings.  Three simple fixes; page title, page description and header tags, can help increase your website visibility within local search results.

Here is a simple overview of these tags:

Page Title

The page title is what shows up at the top of the browser window and is used for the text in the link in search results.  Make sure your page title uses the keywords that are on the web page.  If the web page is about blue widgets, the page title should be Blue Widgets, not page 2 or your company name.  The page title carries a lot of weight with the search engines.

Page Description

The page Meta tag description should contain a description of what the page is about.  It shouldn’t be any longer than a sentence or two at most.  Make sure you include your keywords in the description.  Many times the search engines will use this description in the search results, plus they will generally highlight the keywords from the users search.

Headings

When creating the content for the web page, be sure to use headings.  Headings are just like the headings in newspaper articles and books.  The headings should include your keywords.  When using the heading tags (h1, h2), be sure to use only one h1 tag, but you should use multiple h2, h3 and h4 tags.  The heading tags tell the search engines what the page is about and what is important on the page.

These three items are just the beginning, but if you make these necessary changes it will begin to help your website in the search rankings.

If you are interested in learning more about optimizing your website yourself, there is a great book called “Inbound Marketing” by Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah.  It’s an easy read and you don’t need to be a geek to understand it.

Being proactive with your website can bring a great addition to your business’ bottom line.
